The liver is the second largest organ of the body, and it plays a major role in digestion and detoxification. However, it can easily fall victim to health conditions that lead to a problem in its functioning. Here are some of the major liver problems.

1) Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a condition referring to the inflammation of the liver. There are five types of viral Hepatitis classified into Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

  • Hepatitis A virus and Hepatitis E virus are short-term viral diseases caused by contaminated food or water consumption. Furthermore, improper sanitation and not washing hands result in coming in contact with the virus. The most common symptoms include fever, nausea, abdominal pain, and jaundice.
  • Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus are chronic conditions that can affect the body’s immune system. It is most commonly contracted by coming in contact with another person who is already infected with the Hepatitis B virus. Sexual intercourse with an infected person, sharing needles or coming in contact with a razor causes the transmission of the virus. The virus slowly affects the healthy liver, infests over time, and could lead to serious liver damage.
  • Hepatitis D is a serious liver condition known as delta hepatitis. The condition is contracted on coming in direct contact with the infected blood. It is a very rare condition that occurs in conjunction with Hepatitis B and infects serious damage to the liver.

2) Fibrosis and Cirrhosis

When the liver tissues get scarred due to alcohol consumption or other substances, it leads to a condition called Fibrosis. It represents the first stage, where the condition can block or limit blood flow within the liver.

Cirrhosis is the next stage which is a result of multiple scar tissues. When the liver tries to repair itself, scars are a result of the collateral damage. Furthermore, the major reason for Cirrhosis is due to excessive alcohol consumption. Common symptoms of Cirrhosis include fatigue, nausea, jaundice, and loss of appetite.

3) Non–alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Fatty liver disease is the accumulation of harmful compounds in the liver but is not related to alcohol abuse. According to studies, if more than 5-10% percent of the liver’s weight is fat, then it is called a fatty liver, also known as steatosis. Common symptoms of NAFLD include abdominal bleeding, red palms, and jaundice.

4) Autoimmune liver disease

Autoimmune liver disease or Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) is an inflammatory disease. When a person’s own immune system attacks the liver, it leads to the destruction of liver cells. In turn, the depletion of liver cells can cause cirrhosis and liver failure.

A few symptoms associated with AIH include fatigue, itching (pruritus), yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), nausea, and vomiting.

How to prevent liver problems for a healthy liver?

Nutritious food for a healthy liver including vegetables, fruits, nuts and berries

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in preventing liver problems and promoting a healthy liver. Diet is usually the key to a healthy lifestyle. Consuming a nutritious diet containing cruciferous vegetables, berries, nuts, tofu, and oatmeal is good for the liver. If you like consuming coffee and tea, then you’ll be happy to know that both these beverages are healthy options for your liver.

Hygiene is another key aspect of maintaining a healthy liver. It is important to consume safe drinking water free of harmful contaminants. The safest method to ensure pure drinking water is by installing a water purifier at home. Furthermore, sanitation and regular cleaning of the surroundings can prevent liver problems.

The most common reason for liver problems like Hepatitis and Cirrhosis is the consumption of alcohol. Stopping the consumption of alcohol or consuming it in moderation can aid liver health. However, if the condition has already aggravated, then under a doctor’s recommendation, medications for liver inflammation and regulating blood pressure can be considered.

In hindsight, it shows us the importance of taking care of the liver.  Yet another positive method of promoting a healthy liver is through supplements that aid the liver and protect it from any future liver damages.
