Germs are all around us; in the air and on surfaces we touch. Phones, computer keyboard and mouse, light switches, TV remote, door handles….the numerous ordinary things we touch every single day as we go about our lives. In fact, some studies suggest that touchscreen smartphones and computer keyboards have more germs and bacteria than a toilet bowl! Germs have favorite places to live, preferred ways to travel, and if they are harmful, their own unique ways of causing disease.

Most often they get inside our bodies through the air we breathe or because we touched something with our hands (which is all the time!) We are exposed to new chemicals in water and in the air that did not exist just a few years ago. The survival rates of contagious diseases in the air lasts from 2 hours for common flu, to a year for smallpox. Doctors say that 70% of all contagious diseases are contracted through hand contact. Our immune systems are being overwhelmed, overworked and over exposed to toxins and stresses of all kinds.

Disinfectants are usually known as the first line of defense to kill disease, with antibiotics following closely behind as the second line of defense if the bacteria become life threatening. However, all disinfectants are toxic to human beings – even their fumes are toxic.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that hand hygiene is the primary measure to reduce infections. Through a global campaign called Save Lives: Clean your Hands, the WHO promotes the need to wash and disinfect hands as a method of controlling the spread of communicable diseases. Silver has long been revered by the medical community as an effective and natural disinfectant. Since ancient times, silver has been highly regarded as a versatile healing tool.

In ancient Greece, Rome, Phoenicia and Macedonia, silver was used extensively to control infection. Hippocrates, the ‘Father of Medicine’ taught that silver healed wounds and controlled disease. In India, silver has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as well as in everyday household utensils such as plates and drinking tumblers. In olden days, the women of the house would preserve milk by dropping silver coins in it since silver is known to kill all types of pathogens instantly.

Silver has intrinsic germicidal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and fortifies our food. More than a sign of economic status, being born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth is an indication of a well-nourished upbringing. In World War I, before the advent of antibiotics, silver was an important weapon against disease on the battlefield, used on wounded soldiers. Before the discovery of antibiotics, surgeons used to stitch wounds with thread woven with silver as they believed it helped to prevent infection. More recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US approved a breathing tube with a fine coating of silver, after it was established that it reduced the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia. And that’s just one example of the many roles silver plays in medicine today.

In 1938, the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act was passed in America, and soon after Penicillin was introduced ushering in a new era of antibiotics. Modern pharmaceutical industry began to dominate anti-microbial science. Since silver preparations were more expensive, they soon receded from mainstream medicine. In modern times however, many bacteria have become resistant to pharmaceutical antibiotics and silver is emerging once more as a germ killer.

In the last few decades, the technology of silver as a germ fighter has continued to evolve. SilverSol® technology, patented in the USA by American Biotech Labs in 2007 is one of the most revolutionary developments in the use of silver for medicinal purposes. Known for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties, SilverSol is becoming popular in many new treatments. According to the U.S. patent (approved Nov. 2007), Silver Sol has the ability to destroy 143 types of bacteria, both forms of viruses, mold, yeast, and a limited number of parasites.

QNET’s BioSilver 22 Gel, an advanced skincare product uses SilverSol® Technology, featuring the power of engineered nano-silver that can be applied topically for cleansing, sanitising or even as part of daily skincare routine. BioSilver 22 is a clear, odourless, non-greasy gel that contains no alchohol or preservatives and does not dry the skin. It is recommended for external use on skin for treatment of acne, rashes, bruises, light burns and for various cleansing and sanitizing purposes.
