QNET Asian Champion's Trophy Goes to India

Team India are the new Asian champions in Hockey. The QNET Asian Champion’s Trophy 2016 brought together six teams from across Asia to battle for the coveted title. India, China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and defending champions Pakistan brought their A game to the championship.

India and Pakistan made it all the way to the finals, fighting to prove their mettle. Both teams had exceptional talent but the winning title was reserved for the best – those who could collectively endure physical and mental pressure. Goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute), Yousuf Affan (23rd) and Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) helped India surmount the challenge from Pakistan, who rallied from two goals behind through strikes by Muhammad Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shaan (38th). In a close finish, India beat Pakistan 3-2 to secure the winning title.

Team India personified teamwork and good competitive spirit throughout the tournament. India went into the title contest at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium without captain PR Sreejesh, who was rested due to pulled hamstring and Akash Chikte took the baton from the skipper. Working hard from one round to the next, it was no surprise they made it all the way in the competition. Each and every player made our country proud by giving their best in every game, even when they were under tremendous pressure from the other world class teams.
