City also signed Julián Álvarez from River Plate. He has hit the ground running with a few great cameos in the Premier League. City also added Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United. Phillips was highly instrumental for Leeds in the previous season. He is a great replacement for City’s former captain, Fernandinho, who departed the club this summer.

The stage is set, and Manchester City is ready to compete for the title. Here is a review of City’s recent matches –

1) Manchester City v West Ham United

Full-time scoreline between Manchester City and West Ham United in the Premier League 2022/23 season

West Ham United have been one of the toughest sides to beat in recent times. They have been very compact in defence and do not allow the opposition to score goals easily. The match started with City players imposing themselves in the game. However, the Hammers got close to scoring against the run of play through their striker. Michael Antonio headed the ball wide from a free-kick.

City was alert and could not afford to give away chances. They stepped up with their slick passing. German maestro, Ilkay Gundogan, made a deft pass to split the defence. Erling Haaland latched on to the ball before being brought down by the keeper in the opposition’s penalty box. The referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot.

Erling Haaland quickly picked up the ball with the hope of scoring his first goal in the Premier League. He maintained his composure from the spot and scored his first goal for City with finesse. City was up by 1-0. The second half was equally pulsating, with West Ham United threatening to equalise. However, City’s defence kept them at bay.

In the second half, Haaland doubled his tally and the scoreline with a calm finish. Kevin De Bruyne bypassed the defence again with a majestic pass which Haaland finished with a single touch. Overall, a solid performance from City.

Final scoreline: Manchester City (2) – West Ham United (0).

2) Manchester City v Bournemouth

Kevin De Bruyne celebrates after scoring against Bournemouth

Bournemouth is the newly promoted side in the Premier League. They were very efficient in the Championship and earned their place through automatic qualification. They started their first game back in great fashion by registering a victory. They were hoping to make a major statement by registering a win over the Champions.

However, City was aware of Bournemouth’s potential. Right from the first whistle, they had the tempo and gameplay under control. The first goal was an example of City’s intelligent team play. Gundogan played a quick give and go with Erling Haaland, who promptly attracted Bournemouth defenders before passing the ball back to Gundogan to make it an easy one-vs-one chance. Gundogan calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to open his account for the season.

If the first goal was all about team play, the second goal was down to some individualistic brilliance. At the stroke of half-time, Kevin De Bruyne charged at Bournemouth defenders before releasing a sublime shot from the right foot. The ball curled past the Bournemouth keeper.

The third goal was not far away. Kevin De Bruyne was back in action as he slipped a pass to Phil Foden. Foden took a touch before slotting the ball at the far post. The final goal was a result of smart play from Joao Cancelo at the by-line. He fizzed the ball through a group of players before one of Bournemouth’s players stroked the ball into his own net.

The scoreline was a reflection of City’s dominance!

Final scoreline: Manchester City (4) – West Ham United (0).

3) Manchester City v Newcastle United

Manchester City players celebrate after scoring a goal against Newcastle United

Newcastle has been a rising team in recent times. They have made excellent recruitment this summer and look like a team bound to finish strong by the end of the season. The game provided the perfect start for Cityzens. Ilkay Gundogan was back on the score sheet for the second game running. He made a darting run into the opposition’s penalty area. He received a chipped pass and volleyed it effortlessly to make it 1-0 to City.

Newcastle quickly struck back from a close-range goal. Parity was restored in the game. Newcastle added another one through their striker, who slotted a side-footed finish past Ederson. At half-time, City was trailing, 2-1. Newcastle added another goal after City’s former academy player Kieran Trippier unleashed a great free-kick. The scoreline was 3-1.

A City resurgence was on the cards. City pulled one goal back after Erling Haaland scored from close range in the 60th minute. Right when it seemed like City were heading towards their first defeat of the season, Kevin De Bruyne produced a moment of magic to provide a defence-splitting pass. Bernardo Silva got onto the ball and dexterously scored past the keeper.

Final scoreline: Manchester City (3) – Newcastle United (3).

4) Manchester City v Crystal Palace

Erling Haaland scores a hattrick against Crystal palace in Premier League 2022-23

Crystal palace is yet another side on the rise. In the previous campaign, they had proven to be a tough opponent for City. Manchester City started on the back foot as they went 1-0 down in the 5th minute. The ball was fizzed into the box before accidentally being knocked into his own net by John Stones.

Crystal palace quickly doubled their lead from a well-taken corner, leading to a towering goal from one of their defenders. The scoreline was 2-0. City went into halftime trailing by two goals to nil.

In the 53rd minute, City broke Crystal Palace’s resistance. Bernardo Silva glided past a few Palace defenders before slotting the ball past their goalkeeper. City equalised in the 62nd minute from a powerful close-range header from Erling Haaland, who continued his good goal-scoring run.

City completed the comeback after Erling Haaland tapped in a pass from John Stones. Cityzens were ecstatic as they had managed to turn the tables and lead 3-2. Erling Haaland was on the score sheet again to complete his first hat-trick for City. Ilkay Gundogan made an accurate pass to Haaland, nudging off two defenders before slotting the ball past the Palace keeper.
