Here’s a statistic that may be hard to believe— There were more than 7 billion cell phones around the world, yet only 4.5 billion people have access to working toilets. While the estimated 3.5 billion people without toilets are at risk for health problems, so are the 7 billion with cell phones.

That’s because cell phones emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) or electromagnetic radiation, which has the potential to damage the cells in the body. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies EMFs from cell phones as possible carcinogens. EMFs can interfere with the body’s natural electrical system and disrupt sleep, immune system function, hormone production, and the healing process.

As long as your cell phone is on, it sends out radiation intermittently. Even if you don’t take your phone out of your pocket all day, it continues to expose you to radiation.

Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself from your cell phone.

1. Keep your distance.

Do not carry your cell phone on your person all the time. Ladies, store it in your handbag, and gentlemen, carry it in a messenger bag or a laptop bag. Avoid putting your phone in the pocket unless it is on airplane mode. Keep your phone on the other side of the room when you are sleeping, or switch to airplane mode at bedtime. You will find that you sleep better without the phone near you.

Also, it is good practice to keep your cell phone around 12 to 15 inches away from your body when texting to reduce exposure to radiation.

2. Talk on Speaker or use a Wired Headset

Holding a cell phone to your ear also exposes your salivary glands to EMFs. Research has shown a fourfold increase in cancer of the parotid gland from 1970 to 2006 while rates of other salivary gland cancers have stayed the same. Use the speaker function whenever possible to avoid placing the phone next to your ear for a prolonged duration.

The other option is to use a wired headset. Avoid Bluetooth headsets.

3. Turn your phone off more often.

When your phone is switched off, no radiation is emitted from the device. It’s good to take a break from the phone every now and then. Turn it off and go take a walk. Live in the moment without the need for digital dependency. You may find that turning your device off will actually help take away the distractions and you can focus better on the tasks at hand.

4. Consider alternatives.

Thanks to technology, we now have many different mediums of communication that are either free or available at a negligible cost. If you know you are going to be on a long call, consider using a landline, the old fashioned way! Or use Skype on your computer.

An alternate to conference calls is to use one of the many conferencing programs available online or an option such as Google Hangouts if you are trying to have a team call.

5. Use an EMF shielding device.

A number of tools and shields are now available that help negate the harmful effects of e-radiation. Try the Amezcua E-Guard from QNet, a tiny disc that can easily be stuck on to your tech devices. The E-guard provides protection for your body from the harmful effects of electrosmog exposure from mobile phones, computers, laptops, and televisions.

E-Guard uses a combination of two pioneering energy technologies – Human Firewall and Energetic Programming.

  • Human Firewall Technology uses quartz to absorb harmful frequencies and then the frequencies emit back in a neutralised wave form. This field interacts with the human body and transmits certain specific information.
  • Energetic Programming helps enhance the overall effect by having modelled Amezcua E-Guard with information containing an energy value that promotes your well-being.

6. Limit kids cell phone use time

Children should only use cell phones for emergencies or strictly in speakerphone mode at a safe distance. A child’s body is still developing and cell phone radiation penetrates a child’s brain more deeply than an adult brain. Very few studies have been completed on the effect of this radiation on children’s development.

7. Seek good reception.

Avoid using your cell phone when the signal is weak or when moving at high speed, such as in a car or train. These scenarios cause mobile phones to increase their transmitting power in an attempt to connect to the nearest cell tower. You get more radiation and your battery drains faster under these conditions.

Cell phones with better reception transmit at lower power than those that need to work harder. Whenever possible, use your cell phone only when you have 5 bars.

8. Wait for Call Connection

When making a call, wait for the call to connect before placing the phone next to the ear. The phone emits the most intense radiation during the initial connection, then lowers its power once a connection is established.  A few extra seconds will go a long way here.
