A social awareness event organised by Lions Clubs, in association with QNet India, in Hassan, Karnataka, marked the start of a new life for nearly more than 50 disadvantaged peopleindividuals. At the event, held in the last week of November, people who had lost a limb in tragic circumstances but can’t afford a prosthetic limb were fitted with a Jaipur foot. For some, the relief came after years of waiting.
The event was presided by Lion C. Shivaswamy, President, Lions Club of Hassan, and Chief Guest, Lioness Lalitha Sheshadri, President, Lions Club of Bangalore North, Dist. 317F. Ms Sheshadri mentioned how social service should come from the heart and spoke about the touching experience of offering relief to so many people. “It was heart wrenching to hear how some of the people lost their limbs. While some were had met with involved in accidents, others had developed gangrene. One young girl lost her limb to cancer.” She also noted that in most cases, under privileged individuals are often the first to contribute voluntarily.
After days of meticulous planning, the final day was marked with happy smiles all around as people – some who had waited nearly 4 years – finally got the chance to walk again.
The technicians responsible for limb fitment showed great patience and dedication towards their work. They achieved perfection in the design and finishing of the prosthetic legs, and their exceptional contribution earned them the chief guest’s appreciation.
Among those fitted with the Jaipur leg was Ms Rekha* who lost her leg in an accident nearly two years ago. Excited at the prospect of regaining mobility, she shared how the event organised by Lions Club and QNet was a blessing for her. “I’m delighted to move around freely once again, after so many days. This gift by Lions Club and QNet will enable me and the other people lead more fulfilling lives.”
The prosthetic limb will allow people to go about their daily activities with comfort and ease. Losing a limb can have a deep psychological impact on people. Initiatives like this one by QNet India and Lions Club will give people in need a second chance at living life to the fullest.
